Dental Crowns and Bridges
Missing or damaged teeth are detrimental to your oral health and self-confidence. Parliament Hill Dental offers a wide variety of treatments to restore the beauty, health, and functionality of your smile.
Crowns and bridges are among the most common restorations, have been used since the early days of dentistry, and the procedures and materials have improved dramatically with today’s advanced technology.
A traditional crown is used to protect a weak or damaged tooth when a filling is insufficient. It shrouds the tooth in a thick, protective layer, usually made of porcelain. In some dental offices, you may have to wait several weeks while your crown is manufactured at a far-away dental laboratory. Our Downtown Ottawa office is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including the E4D in-office milling system. Here, dental crowns are a single visit procedure.
Our team will begin preparing the tooth by removing diseased and damaged areas of the tooth. Depending on the amount of healthy tooth material, it may be built up with a resin material or reduced in size. Your dentist will then shape it carefully, for optimal retention of the restoration.
When the tooth is ready, a digital impression will be taken. The doctor will design your crown using sophisticated software, and send the data to the milling machine. Your crown is sculpted from high strength, color-matched, metal-free material. Finally, the dentist will check the appearance and fit of the crown before cementing it in place.
The entire procedure is completed within a week. When completed, your restored tooth will look beautiful and natural – as if your smile had always been flawless. With proper care, your dental crown should last for many years.
A bridge is used to replace one or several missing teeth. These prosthetic teeth called pontics, are permanently attached to dental crowns. Typically, there is a single pontic, or several in a row, with a crown at each end. The crowns are placed over the teeth on either side of the gap, providing solid support for the pontics. It literally bridges the gap in your smile.
The procedure for a bridge is very similar to that of a crown. The supporting teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and the bridge is fabricated right here in our office.
Crowns and bridges can be economical, long-lasting solutions to a variety of dental problems. However, they are not the only options. Depending on the nature of your concerns, fillings, bonding, dentures, or implants may be viable alternatives.
The team at Parliament Hill Dental always perform a comprehensive evaluation and explain all of your options before planning any treatment. We will help you make the best choice for your health, smile, and budget. Call us for more information, or to schedule an appointment with our dental team.
