Orthodontic treatments become necessary to straighten teeth or when teeth or jaw structure do not fit together properly. These problems can lead to speech difficulty, premature wear of the teeth, as well as increase the chance of injury to the rest of the teeth and jaw joints.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first screening around age 7 to decide if an early treatment could be the right thing for your child. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so there’s no such thing as being too old for braces. It’s never too late to correct a smile and a growing number of our patients going for orthodontics services are adults who are choosing now to invest in the smiles they‘ve always wanted.
Benefits of early orthodontic treatments:
When early orthodontic work is needed our team will simply monitor your child’s growth patterns until the best time for treatment is determined. Each child is unique and has different speed and process of development. Early orthodontic treatment can be very beneficial for their future and will typically begin around ages 9 – 14 when all of the baby teeth have fallen out and many permanent teeth have already grown in.
Adolescence is the optimal time for orthodontic treatment because by the age of 11-13 the deciduous (baby) teeth usually have all been lost, and the permanent ones have largely come in. This is the perfect time to start correcting problems that cause a bad bite (malocclusion), improper tooth spacing or poor alignment.
Orthodontic treatment for adults is different in two important respects. First, because the development of the jaws is complete, changes in the jaw structure can’t be done the same way, secondly, because periodontal (gum) disease is more prevalent in adults and must be brought under control before orthodontic treatment begins.
