Repairing an Infected Tooth

Root canals are a common dental procedure performed to repair severely damaged, cracked or decayed teeth. They can help repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it.

The procedure involves removing the nerve and pulp and cleaning and sealing the inside of the tooth. This prevents infection and abscess formation. With proper oral hygiene, the restored tooth can function normally and last a lifetime. To finish the procedure, the tooth is generally capped with a dental restoration, such as a dental crown.

At Parliament Hill Dental, root canals are typically performed in one or two office visits, depending on the severity of the condition and treatment plan.

The Root Canal Procedure

First, a local anesthetic is applied to the affected tooth and surrounding area. The tooth is isolated, so it can be kept clean and free of saliva during the procedure.

An opening is made in the upper part of the tooth, and then the pulp and nerve are removed.

The root canal is cleaned, medicated and filled with a biocompatible material. After this, you'll receive a temporary filling.

Your dentist (or a member of our team) will then place a restoration to permanently protect your tooth .
